Curriculum Overview 2017-18

Curriculum

The curriculum at Harris Aspire is designed to ensure that each individual student is educated and supported to succeed in the world today in line with the latest educational research. The Academy offers a wide range of very high quality academic and vocational courses. The curriculum for each Key Stage is outlined below whilst details of the subjects and examination courses currently on offer at Harris City Academy Crystal Palace can be viewed via Curriculum tab. Personal, Social, Health Education (PSHEE) is delivered through a combination of the Tutorial Programme, discreet lessons and some specialist input from external experts, further details of this can be found under the title, “Aspire to Achieve, All can Achieve” which outlines the additional programmes in place at Aspire.

Lower School Curriculum (NO Lower School 2017-18)

The Lower School curriculum is followed by students in Years 7 and 8. Following their admissions tests for the Academy, Year 7 students are placed in tutor groups according to their score to allow teaching to be as closely matched as possible to students’ needs to ensure all students make the best possible progress.  To tailor this support further, students are placed in one of 8 sets for the core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science based on further subject specific assessments of their current ability and aptitude in these areas.

Upper School Curriculum

The Academy offers a wide range of very high quality academic and vocational courses. All students are given subject options advice, guidance and make their choices during Year 8 as part of the Success Pathways guided course process. Our year 11 are taught alongside year 12 who are part of the Harris Federation Post 16, Aspire is responsible for delivering the level 2 provision for students joining Harris Sixth form.

The Academy tries as far as possible to cater for all subject choices within the timetable, but if only a small number of students express a preference for a Key Stage 4 course it may not be possible to run the subject. Some subjects may also be oversubscribed, in which case students will be selected according to their aptitude and effort made in both.
